Design #97

Second try at the design I posted a while back for an appliance repair company. Logo design is not mine; everything else is. This will still have some tweaks applied to it, rearranging the inner content.

More of J. Alfred Prufrock. I’m not thrilled with the spacing here…the whitespace isn’t well-balanced. I really like this font though and mean to keep it. =D

Next in the Prufrock Design Saga. I like that typeface up top (called Charles St), though the use of Courier against it is probably not the best choice. Feels odd.

Next step in the Prufrock design project. Don’t like this one as much as the previous one, I don’t think.

OK. So. Project for the next few weeks, since I was enjoying the poetry designs so much, is to go through, line-by-line (or, more accurately, phrase by phrase) and do designs based on “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” by T.S. Eliot, because it is basically one of my favorite poems ever and also has a lot of great images to play with.

So here’s the first one!

I am really, REALLY pleased with how this turned out. Another of my favorite poems, The Windhover by Gerard Manley Hopkins. The picture was originally more daylight-y but I used a texture overlay to get some more sunrise lighting in there, and I really think the text does work here well, though it’s certainly not perfect. Do look at the large version; it loses a *lot* in the thumbnail.

More poetry. This is one of my favorite poems of all time, and a creepy one to boot — Coleridge’s “Rime of the Ancient Mariner.”

Moving over to lines of poetry for my typographical practice now. “Invictus” by William Ernest Henley. Incidentally, I have this line fixed in my mind as being “Black as pitch from pole to pole” but the internet stubbornly insists it’s “the Pit.” My memory is going…

Another faux-book-cover. Typographically I don’t like this one as much as the other one, but I do like the photo/layout effect. So it evens out I guess.

I am, beginning right now, making a concerned effort towards gaining a better typographic sense. As such, I’m going to start doing designs specifically focused on it — at the moment, I’m messing with taking books I like and making new covers for them. I like the effect here (and this is a fantastic book btw).
